TwistedHelixis Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 The school has just purchased some stickers to put over the keyboard on a new Ukrainian pupils Chromebook. I need to add Ukrainian as a keyboard layout option and have made the following change in Google Workspace under Devices > Chrome > Settings > User & Browsers But Ukrainian is not listed as an option on the Chromebook. Any ideas?
Jawloms Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 Do you know it's Ukranian needed? We had three Ukranian students here, set them all up with Ukranian Windows and then they all wanted Russian.

For the moment lets assume they do need Ukranian keyboard layout.
jthompson Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 (edited) I leave those settings blank to allow users to pick from all languages. The user will need to be guided through a few different things: Adding an input language: After signing into the Chromebook, open Chrome OS settings > Advanced > Languages and inputs > Inputs and keyboards. Add languages under Input methods and Spelling and grammar check as required, keeping English in the list as well. The input language can then be switched in the system tray (or by Ctrl+Space). Setting their Google account language: This sets the language used for the UI across Google web apps: Gmail, Classroom, etc. on all devices they use. Go to Chrome OS settings > Advanced > Languages and inputs > Languages, scroll down to the Google Account language section and follow the link to Manage Google Account language. Change the preferred language as required, keeping English listed under Other languages. Setting the Chromebook device language: This sets the Chrome OS interface language of the current device: sign out button, system panel toggles, etc. Go to Chrome OS settings > Advanced > Languages and inputs > Languages and change Device language. TwistedHelixis Posted October 13, 2022 Author Posted October 13, 2022 After signing into the Chromebook, open Chrome OS settings > Advanced > Languages and inputs > Inputs and keyboards. We have the OS settings section on the Chromebook completely blocked for the pupils, which is why I am trying to do all of this from Workspace admin GUI and pushing it out. I am not at the school until Monday afternoon, but will have a play then. Thanks for the detailed steps, its very helpful.
jthompson Posted October 14, 2022 Posted October 14, 2022 Maybe look at having your Ukrainian pupils' devices (assuming they're individually assigned) in a dedicated OU in Google Admin, so that you can allow the settings pages for them. I think if you specify languages in Admin > Chrome > Settings > Users & browsers > Allowed input methods, they might still need to be able to access the settings pages in order to add them anyway. Not tested that but that's what I'd expect.
Scan099 Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Hi - I am trying to do to the same. Did you have any success with it and if so how did you go about it?
TwistedHelixis Posted March 24, 2023 Author Posted March 24, 2023 I enabled the settings pages on the Chromebook for that user so they could pick the settings needed. Although I recently noticed I know have the option to pick UK, Ukrainian or Russian from the login screen. I guess something must have applied under the 'Devices' settings.
