Smoothwall Chrome extension

Apologies - don't know much about this product, but is the smoothwall chrome extension based upon a hosted instance of theirs, or does it talk back to the onsite firewall for every request?

 

I've just tested a Chromebook with and without the extension enabled - perfect with it off, and super slow for every page request when its on.

 

I've asked their support, but anticipate it taking them a while to reply.

 

It's a site which I am taking over, but haven't yet (hence the limited knowledge and access!)

We use the extension for our Chromebooks, and if you're onsite there's something called Secret Knock that needs configuring so that it's not double-filtering and causing speed issues. https://kb.smoothwall.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015978080.

I double filter ours, dont like the secret knock as it turns the proxy off and expect the firewall to have 443/80 open which we dont. i just set it as the wrong ip on our appliance and it seems to do the trick.

 

double filtering doesnt seem to be an issue, the plugins just an adblocker on steroids so shouldnt have any impact on performance, atleast weve not seen any.

 

as for talking to the onsite appliance, the filtering/etc is sent to the cloud, then your onsite appliance ingests the data every now and then to make it available on your onsite reports.

I can definitely see a huge performance issue with the extension on vs off, maybe they have a bad instance.

It doesn't talk home to any server - all the work is done locally to try and avoid performance issues. What sort of CPU/RAM are we talking in the CB? Feel free to email me your support ticket and I will escalate it. [email protected]

Hi Tom - I’ve monitored ram and cpu, and it’s hardly being used. I can forward the case to you, which I’ve sent 2 videos showing it on to as well.
