Server security issue

Can anybody shed some light on this problem please.

 

I am logged on to the server (server2k) as administrator, trying to install a piece of software. It partially installs then fails asking me to 'Verify that I have sufficient privileges to start system services'.

Also earlier I tried to cancel a process running (savservice) via task manager and it told me I did not have access to do this. Yet I can go into services and stop/start processes.

Presumably you're running Active Directory? Have you verified what group(s) administrator is a member of? Do you have a secondary admin account setup and that you can test with? Have you applied any policies and/or restrictions to the default domain policy?

You can't kill savservice (Symantec AV, I think) because the AV prevents this to protect itself from being stopped by viruses. It's quite normal.

It's Sophos and you can kill it, I do when it starts hogging too many resources

 

I would check what groups the admin account is a member of.

I think bizzel's is possibly right, as killing it through Task Manager could also be seen as a script/virus attempting to kill the service.

 

However, this still leaves you unable to install software which a little strange. You could try using the Run as method.

I often cancel Savservice when it hogs all of the processor, usually on client machines. This is generally down to the wrong configuration.

 

The other problem is the pain.

Enterprise Admin

Group Policy Creator Owner

Network Administrator

Schema Admin

Sophos Console Administrator

SophosAdministrator
