Hello all,

Just taken the helm at a new place, very tidy setup indeed.

Looking to implement cloud backups for the school data as nothing in place yet. Anyone got any recommendations on who to go with?

Would like, as I think most would, lots of storage and ultra-reliable/secure and really cheap too. :)

Thanks for any and all suggestions. :)

Depends what you want to backup, email, VM's etc. Altaro and Wasabi is a decent option if price is a big thing.

Would certainly be SIMS and FMS, probably the Veeam backups of the MIS server infact plus a few drives. <1Tb

Wasabi looks VERY reasonable there!

Are you already looking at cloud anyway? If, for example, you already have an Azure subscription or you're considering setting up an AWS subscription then it might make sense to look at backing up to that cloud service - it arguably makes sense to minimise the amount of overhead and different interfaces you need to grapple with in the long term.

Has anyone tested a restore from a cloud backup such as Wasabi or others? interested to see how long it would take to restore a VM and also if it's reliable enough?

Thanks in advance.

Take those wasabi comparison figures with a pinch of salt, they seem to be comparing multi-region hot storage prices from AWS/Azure/GCP. For backup you would typically want archive/cold storage without the multi-region options.

We're already backing up to GCP buckets, but looking to more the backup to AWS for DR because we're hosting in GCP. It kind of makes sense to back up to a provider that doesn't host the infrastructure.

We restore a 950GB database from nothing to up and running in about 20min on GCP. (including building the database server itself)

Thanks for the recommendations all! Going with Wasabi, can't beat the price on that one.

unless you use archive storage prices.

What do you mean?

That the wasabi prices are not hands down better. Example GCP archive storage is around £2.29 per TB/Month I'm sure Azure/AWS are similar. Wasabi seems to be more than double that, but they are marketing against a hot storage which you don't need for backups.

The thread is about backups - not hot storage.
