Strange FTTP behaviour on a new install

We have had a new TalkTalkBusiness FTTP line installed as a backup line and the install with Openreach went well - it's all connected however we have strange issue with the connection and it's puzzling us.

 

Using the provided TTB router with my phone connected to the router wirelessly, speedtest is giving circa 650mbps down and 105mbps up. This is about right due to the distance to the exchange (around 8miles away) and the tarrif is a 900mbps down 110mbps up.

 

The strange thing is when we use 3 different laptops connected to the router via a Cat6 cable the download drops to around 25mpbs and the upload is constant at around 105mbps.

 

We have tried 2 different routers (draytek with Giga WAN2 ports) and they are giving the same issue.

 

We have tried different ethernet cables, different routers and different laptops and they are all giving around 25mbps down and 105mbps up.

 

I don't get it!?

 

If anything i would have expected the wifi to be slower than the directly connected ethernet connection.

Is it DHCP assigned for IP or PPPoE? I think TTB is DHCP but I cant remember. Either way try connecting the laptop directly into the ONT and see if that gets better.

I am trying to think why wired would be that much slower, wireless though is probably much about the max speed wifi gets.

Double check the routers have options to enable hardware acceleration as well as these can be off and a lot of routers can have issues with speeds over 300mb.

I assume you’ve checked the laptop have a gigabit port (although I’d still expect more than 25Mbps!). Even now I’m still occasionally surprise by a 10/100 port on a modern laptop

Im going to try another device on monday. One of the laptops ive been using to test ive brought home and is giving the same results even on my home connection which i know is a 150mbps connection so it must be the laptop, even with up to date drivers it's giving the same result - the laptop has a i5-4th gen installed in it.

 

My home desktop pulls down around 150mbps on speed test which is a i5-6th gen, not sure if that makes any difference but it's certainly head scratching.

 

Hardware acceleration is enabled on my home 2860 which is why my desktop can download at the top end speeds.

 

The laptop has a Gig NIC on the motherboard too.

 

What is interesting, when i connect the laptop into a FTTC line at work (which the FTTP is replacing), speedtest on the laptop gives 68mbps which is about right for that line.

 

Thing is, i'm confused by the router that TTB has provided because i would have thought that would give the full download speed, i mean the router is obviously capable of it as my phone downloads at around 650mbps...

 

Will try the ONT on monday, and our TTB is a static IP and we have bought 8 IPs to host some services.

 

Will see what happens on monday when i test yet another device.

Will definitely try directly connecting to the ONT as the router will be connected to the smoothwall so i'm thinking ditch the router and directly connect the ONT to the smoothwall [emoji848]
