iPad prompts to sign-in to Apple Account

I'm going to be flattening and restarting our iPads and MDM over the summer as they've become a mess.

 

We have issues with users being prompted to sign-in to their Apple ID on a regular basis, however, these are shared iPads and each has it's own account to allow photos etc to be backed up. The passwords to the accounts are not known to staff or students.

 

I realise this isn't the "Apple" way to do this and we should be using shared iPad mode, but, we're a special school for Autistic kids and requiring them to sign-in to an iPad is likely to be the start of world war 3

 

Has anyone else been able to get around this?

I'd be interested in the replies to this, because this is an issue that plagues our iPads. We have flattened them before, but they are asking for credentials again. One thing we do know, is that it will ask for credentials if you deploy an iOS Store App, instead of a VPP Store app. Despite not deploying any iOS store apps, we are still getting the popup.

 

If you want to make life a bit easier, you can use one Apple ID across all iPads. That also reduces the amount of times you need to purchase an app. Syncing photos can be done if you have a QNAP or Synology NAS, as they have a file sync app that can be installed on them. There's also a corresponding iOS app, which you can configure to the iPads to point to the NAS and sync photos to that. Then all the photos are in one place and can be copied somewhere else via a script, somewhere like your staff shared area. The only downside to this, is it's difficult to identify which photo was taken on which iPad, because all the photos end up in the same place. Our script will move the photos into a new folder with today's date (such as 2022 > 07 > 08 for photos taken today). While that will still dump all photos from all iPads taken today into the one folder, it is relatively easy for the member of staff to look through and find the photos that they took.

In the old days before managed ids and device deploy you still had to evidence buying enough "gift" codes for the software. i think now theres a limit of 5 to an id before they start being funny now that theres a managed solution. Youre probably getting hammered for passwords because of the mass account sharing.

 

Use device deploy, disable the store and disable account management on the device. ive got hundreds setup this way and never been asked for account details as theyre not required.

 

 

On another note, we finally got our ASM federated with google and setup shared ipad properly on a hand full of devices to play with - the acounts are 4 digit pins for the kids so id say thats probably fine? its actually really good if you can set it up

I have all but washed my hands of our iPads, as no-one would give any feedback apart from sending kids along when they couldn't save. We initially set them up as shared, but that didn't seem to work. Following advice here, I set a few up another way which I suspect was better, but no-one would trial them. Unfortunately that was months ago, and I have searched our MDM to try to work out where the changes were made, but cannot find a likely spot. I'll post in the unlikely event I work out what got changed.

Basically, the pre-installed apps may want credentials but if you replace them with ones you install via your MDM, they shouldn't.

We used to have it set up with 5 iPads per AppleID, but were informed by our supplier that it isn't necessary any more and Apple had relaxed the rule. We just took their word for it.

IIRC it's just "turn on and away you go". However, as I said, no-one ever bothered to report back or test so it might not be working properly. Looking at the "skip" list, I wonder if iCloudStorage might be an idea...

whilst true, its really not an inconvenience if you can keep the kids using in on the same ipads, the class management tools that come from it are really usefull and the kids 4 digit pins make it a doddle after the first session.

Incorrect.......You get 200GB of iCloud Storage WHEN you set up users to use an Managed Apple ID (MAID) and they sign into the iPad with this ID.

 

It is a requirement of using Apple's Shared iPad configuration to give users a MAID.

 

Using a Personal Apple ID across the same devices leaves you in whole world of pain and goes against Apple's App Store T & C's

Its very likely Apple's preinstalled apps, iMovie, Garageband etc have not been wiped from the devices. This is a must do when you first get them so you can then install the same apps but as a "Managed App" With a decent MDM in place this is a easy thing to do.

You've got "Location" as a skipped set up item in your configuration, this is a CRITICAL set up feature as it gives the iPad time and date settings and can impact on WiFi connectivity as well.
