Anyone using RM for broadband

Hello all,

We are looking to change broadband suppliers from our old council-run company. I'm talking to Schools Broadband and LGFL but I tentatively contacted RM too. The initial pricing is good however I'm old enough to remember RM of old who were maybe, not the best...

 

I don't want to let my experience from 15 years ago hold me back from a potentially good solution so wonder if any large secondary schools here could vouch for them before I go back and obtain further costings.

I too remember the woes of using a CC3 network from early in my career, but we've been using RM broadband & Safetynet for many years now and it's been rock solid. We recently upgraded our package for higher capacity and that process went without a hitch.

I use to support an 'RM School' and we never had issues with the broadband, plus safetynet is very easy to use.

Apologies for sticking my uninvited oar in. For large secondary schools I would definiteley consider some other solutions, specifically on-site, managed by you, so that you have full visibility of what's going on in your network and can cater for a much more complex environment than a primary school etc. Our experience is that this also allows much more flexibilty around BYOD, VLAN based policies, different devices/users, integrated security and such things as remote access, SDWAN and application control.

I work as part of a multi academy trust, and at our sites we have a mixture of Schools Broadband (Talk straight), RM Broadband and a handful of other ISPs. Always found RM broadband to be the best when it comes to the RM SafetyNet Product for web filtering rules and their RM Connect (Complimentary firewall configuration product, 2-3 years old now), to make your own firewall changes without the need to contact their support for a change request. They also tie in the RM SafetyNet with local radius auth on WiFi And have a cutdown (RM Unifi) syncing tool for user groups from active directory. Note you do not need the full RM Unify tools but If you do have the full product you can get some additional granularity on groups in SafetyNet. By far RMs tools are the simplest to use but can also be the most comprehensive if needed.

We've been using RM for Internet access since the start of the RBC's (via SWGfL) and it's been extremely reliable and we've just moved out recent secondary school to join our MAT over to it, which has the added bonus of allowing us to have a our own VPN effectively within their infrastructure without doing anything.

 

Safetynet might not be feature rich as some of the other filtering platforms, but you can have multiple different filtering policies applied with different criteria so for the cost does what it needs to.

 

In the last 2 decades only had a handful of outages that might have lasted 4 hours at most in the early days, and rare these days

I'll vouch for Wave 9 here too. Whenever I've worked with them I've been very pleased with the outcome!

I too can vouch for Wave 9, we have them in all but 1 of our schools in our MAT, very pleaased with the internet, filtering firewall and customer service.
