Collating Photos of Events? Who takes them with what?

We are looking at how we create and share photos within the school so we can produce better more dynamic material to share with parents.

 

In days of yore we provided staff with iPads and they emailed all manor of photos around and about and the world was good.... (Or was it...) They weren't the right device for other content creation or to drive the front of classroom experience for us so we have moved on to laptop style devices but these aren't as portable and don't have as good a cameras so aren't appropriate for this sort of thing.

 

So in Today's world....

• We have a couple of trips google phone setup so it can take photos which are logged in and managed phones through workspace management
  
• The photos photos and videos automatically upload to a google photos account on the phone
  
• That photos account is shared with those who process the photos (They don't like the download of a zip file for multiple photos from this)
  
• Back at base once those photos are downloaded they can then be used on a device Chromebook / PC / the correct phone to process the photos onto the next stage.
  

 

 

Staff cannot use their own devices to take photos of pupils. (Do other places allow this? As they have the best cameras about and we certainly can't buy all staff a pixel or iphone!)

 

Any thoughts or methods you do this would be appreciated, the auto uploading from a device and then ease of transferring this to twitter, VLE or SchoolComms would be ideal. (Zipping of multiple photos seems to cause some issues for our end users)

 

Do you have a rock solid method for auto uploading photos from digital cameras wirelessly? (I'd previously looked for Wireless Android Cameras but had no joy.)

Does anyone use anything for managing photo repositories?

Have you employed a photographer in your trust?

Do you allow staff to take photos on their own personal phones?

Have you found iPhones easier to deal with than Android?

Staff using their own devices is an absolute no.

 

We have a staff member who takes photos of in school events on a DSLR and transfers them to our storage and his own school google account as a back up I believe.

 

On school trips they have compact cameras with SD cards, all then uploaded to our storage.

 

PE department have iphones attached to our wifi without a sim card and photos get uploaded once in reach of wifi.

 

Our trust does have a photographer but hes spread around 30 schools.

To answer your questions:

- If anyone makes a rock solid way of uploading and managing photos, and price it sensibly, they will make a bomb!!

- I've used the photo module of Planet eStream and that worked, if staff did what they were meant to.

- You can set up OneDrive to auto sync Photos, but I don't think you can dictate where it goes.

- Only used Android phones so can't comment on the differences.

 

I know some schools that have the rule that personal phones can be used to take photos but they have to be uploaded and removed by the end of the day.

Overall someone needs to set out expectations and what happens to photos, naming convention, tags, folder structure, etc.

When I was in a Primary school the main problem we had was that all photos had to be signed off by the class teacher

Because they had to check that every kid in the photo had agreement from their parents or guardians for their photo to be used

 

This mean that IT could not do much until they photos had been signed off

 

OK - as I taught some of them I could check the Year 5 and 6 kids myself - but the rest of the school had to be approved

 

The school was especially sensitive as we had 2 kids that ABSOLUTELY must not appear in the local paper or on the web site - or even posted up in the school anywhere

 

The first few years that I was there this worked OK as most parents approved the use of the photos - but then a weird rumour started that $somethingmighthappen and a lot of parents didn't tick the relevant box that year

I also discovered that the wording of the question was dodgy and needed re-doing - and in any case it only applied for one year and the box had been moved to be less clear

 

so that basically messed up the Head's policy of getting the school in the papers a couple of times a month
