MatthewL Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 I am in need of an internally hosted Dropbox/OneDrive solution, that will work on Windows, Android or Apple devices. Cannot use anything internet facing simple as so need to find a solution free or paid for. Have a batch of files on a server that need to be synced to various devices with minimal intervention from IT, talking GB's of data. A sync solution is the only way around it we can think unless anyone else can. Anyone aware of any products out there, sure there was something before but was a long time ago when it was looked into. Cheers
TechMonkey Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 Off the top of my head I think a lot of NAS boxes will do that, I'm sure Synology has this ability. But it isn't going to be easily managed.
mavhc Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 https://docs.linuxserver.io/general/awesome-lsio has a couple of sync options, syncthing and resilio-sync Syncthing's iOS app isn't as good as Android one though

Cheers DFS? You could go with a NextCloud installation. Happy to chat over DM if you want. Chris
jthompson Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 Never used it but NextCloud seems like a good place to start. There are mobile and desktop clients available.
mavhc Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 NextCloud is the fork of OwnCloud by the original developer. What you need depends on specific features you want. Auto save videos taken from phone? Auto syncing so you can used offline?
MatthewL Posted May 9, 2022 Author Posted May 9, 2022 Thank you for the replies, some bits there worth investigating. @TechMonkey - we have the data on our network and it needs to go to a PC where it can be opened and read in a business continuity event. @mavhc - will have a read into that, it may not end up been iOS but wanted to factor it in. @chris_uk - DFS no good, machines will be off the network with limited access to things and will not be domain joined. Having a quick look at the replies there are some viable options, just need to investigate further and see what if anything is suitable.
free780 Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 Isn’t it more difficult to secure external access? Web Application Filter Intrusion Prevention System MFA Etc. Rather than going to a cloud hosted solution?

MatthewL Posted May 9, 2022 Author Posted May 9, 2022 There won't be any external access to it, it will be used internally to sync files from a server where a data dump will happen and then to PC's on a locked down network on site over our VPLS network.

If you wanted to remove the third party software aspect, couldn’t you just setup a schedule task with robo copy to mirror to that folder? Laptop/offline pc can have a domain password to connect to shared folder to access and copy files, while domain would have no access to said pc in opposite direction preventing any ransomware etc Just as an alternative thought train! Norphy Posted May 10, 2022 Posted May 10, 2022 I'm almost loathe to suggest it, but SharePoint? That fits the bill pretty much perfectly. All OneDrive is is the My Files part of SharePoint hosted in Microsoft's data centre.
mavhc Posted May 10, 2022 Posted May 10, 2022 So it's an emergency system. Make sure you have some way of checking it's actually working. If you're just sending files to a random PC on the network then robocopy/rsync/zfs send, with an email to indicate complete success or any failure. Then filter those emails to produce an emergency email to a group when failure happens.

Working on the basis there will be no internet available. @mavhc - yes that is going to be included as part of it the users will have a check list to carry out. They are good suggestions but got to work on the basis the information maybe on a tablet of other OS as an option.

There are clients for Android and iOS that work with that, it doesn't need to be connected to the Internet.
mavhc Posted May 10, 2022 Posted May 10, 2022 If it's not automated there's little point, it will be forgotten about. Why do they want a tablet not a desktop computer. It's going to need power to receive files every day. How many places is it syncing to, just 1?
MatthewL Posted May 10, 2022 Author Posted May 10, 2022 That's not our issues its a service to do that, they need to check that it matches what is showing on the live system and only they can do that. Got to have options, could be a BC issue and building cannot be occupied, so grab tablet and go with the information on. Cannot do that with computer to easy. These are options we are looking at. There will be various sync points depending on service. In my eyes its more for the world ending and will be a waste of time but just ticking the boxes.
MatthewL Posted May 12, 2022 Author Posted May 12, 2022 Surprised no one has mentioned it but I believe FoldR can do exactly what I am looking for following a few discussions. Just waiting for confirmation and I will look to evaluate that with there been UK based teams/support.

Then again, I wouldn't recommend what you're trying to do full stop so...
