Wiping HPE SAS HDDs

Hi all,

 

I have a stack of HPE MM1000JFJTH 1TB SAS HDDs.

I need to wipe the data from them, however, the appliance they came from is an active server (the drives were too small so were replaced with larger ones).

 

I have portable USB HDD adaptors which I would usually use to read a disk rather than insert it into a computer, however these HDDs don't have the usual notches for SATA and power.

 

Does anyone know if there are adaptors that can be purchased so I can connect these to a regular computer to get the drives totally wiped?

Those are SAS hard drives, not SATA. You can connect a SATA drive to a SAS controller, but not the other way around. You need a SAS controller of some description to connect these drives to.

Might be easier just to get a data destruction company to collect and wipe them.

This is what I'd do, if you absolutely *need* to have them wiped.

Otherwise just open the disks up and scratch the platters on both sides. Usually a fun activity!

I've taken disks apart and used the magnets on my whiteboard and to hold a stack of post-it notes on my Kanban board.

Had similar back in the day when I first started...

 

Needed to RMA a server drive to DELL and after delivering the new one they said the old one would be collected within a day or so (cue my panic to get it wiped)!

 

Couldn't work out why it wouldn't even get recognised on my PC... It was too early on in my career to think about trying to put it back in the server and attach it to the SAS backplane.

 

Not that I would even now, can't see anyone would be very interested in what was on there (if you can even read one disk of a RAID array once removed).

 

EDIT: I even cut pieces out of the SATA connectors in my PC...
