We have been having assigning work since last year using Google Classroom. It doesn't affect all classes. When a teacher tries to create a new piece of work using either 'Assignment' or 'Question Assignment' (or 'Re-use post') as soon as they have typed a title it says 'Not saved' and they are unable to assign it. It doesn't happen if they use 'Material' or 'Question'.

*Update* For one class at least none of the classwork options work. Other staff cannot be added to classes in the classes with this issue.

If I create a new class it doesn't happen. It doesn't seem to be related to the teacher, just their classroom when they assign work to their own classroom (or if I try to assign work to that classroom).

Not the browser - I have tried various browsers, clearing cache etc. + different devices.

Anyone had anything similar?

Thanks

Yep...sounds as though the original teacher who created the classroom has been removed so there is no primary teacher assigned. There is a way to do this through the classroom API...if you open a new chat in Google Workspace they will be able to talk you through how to make another user the primary teacher.

Hi, thanks, I'll get on to this. It does seem strange as one teacher posted work around 8:30 but when she tried again an hour later the problems started.

I will post an update once it is sorted in case any one else has the same issue.

If you open a new chat with Google through Workspace they will be able to advise on what to do to get this sorted. I had exactly the same error has you a few months back and it was because of what I listed above. The original creator of the classroom had been deleted from Google Workspace but not before another an invitation to be primary teacher had been accepted. This is what was causing the issue. Google first advised to delete the pending invite through the Classroom API (they talked me through how to do this), and then to make another staff member the primary teacher (again using the Classroom API which they talked me through). Once this was done all was working again as expected.

Even if this isn't the same issue your best bet is to chat to them first so they can help you diagnose. I had no idea what the issue was at first and spent hours googling and not finding anything.

Hope that helps and you get it sorted soon.

I had a few of these, ended up copying the classroom and reassigning the staff and pupils.. kept all the assignments just not the stream but there wasn't much on it.

On the specific class Under the Classwork there is a link to the class drive.

The owner of that folder is the class owner.

If the drive link is not listed the owner is deleted.

If it's recently deleted, 20 days, you can restore the class owner on the users admin.

For the class that is still working OK, I can see that the owner is the correct teacher by selecting the class drive as you say. On the classes that are not working I get a Google 404 error.
