Windows 10 showing as offline when it’s not

Hi,

I know that this has been a known issue with Windows 10 for a long time, but is there a permanent fix for the issue where windows 10 implies that a machine is offline, when it clearly isn’t?

 

It’s not a big deal, as after logging in the users realise that the machine is not actually offline!!

 

Surely Microsoft have fixed this by now???

 

I have seen a registry fix for the NCSI but there must be an MS fix by now?

It's down to nlasvc in my opinion crud.

 

There are registry hacks to point it to another URL. But the globe itself is not very meaningful and can be misleading.

Thanks for the info. It’s not a big issue as 9/10 times the globe is misleading as the machines are not normally offline as the globe implies. Just wondered if there was a solid solution really as teachers think that they are offline!!

I'm surprised they even know what that is for... We have the exact opposite problem!

 

I seem to be getting more issues getting called to classroom or with the teacher coming to the office with their laptop saying they can't log on or get to a shared drive, print etc.

 

When I investigate the wi-fi is off or just hasn't connected for some reason... and they haven't noticed.

I sometimes find ping 8.8.8.8 resolves it, also try pinging a reliable external web site via its fqdn if both those work then there should be no issue. Pinging is not 100% reliable but if you get a result of DNS should be some helpful indication

Ha ha! Most of them don’t probably don’t know what it means! The head of computing has said that sometimes when the machines are showing the globe, some students don’t have access to their documents/files. I searched online and apparently in Windows 10, the “ Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) connects to a “test site” to verify if the returned content is the “Microsoft Connect Test” string.

 

If that is the case, NCSI will command the operating system to display a “connected” or “No Internet” message if it isn’t.

 

I just don’t know why this only affects some of the machines in school???

We found a couple of applications didn't work when the computer thought it didn't have internet. I think one of them was Google Drive for Desktop. We fixed it by changing some registry keys.

I think what fixed it for was was increasing the hop count and enable active probing.
