Wireless Advice Procurve 420 AP

I have one Procurve 420 AP. I am currently struggling with connectivity when WPA-PSK with AES or TKIP is switched on. With no security, the laptop connects first time every time.

 

I have matched the Key on the AP with the Laptop, and also the security settings to the AP, but it still never connects.. I am using Windows Wireless Zero Config, but I never have this problem at home...

What am I doing wrong?

Does the laptop support WPA? if it's a 11b then there's a good chance it doesn't. Also make sure it's at least SP2 as that added better WPA support on XP.

Its got G support, but how would I find out whether it supports WPA? The machine also has XP SP2.

What make/model wireless card does it have?

Have you tried the latest wireless drivers?

Is it an HP laptop?

Is the access point running the latest firmware?

Hi,

 

First of all update the driver for the wireless card if there is a new driver available. To find out if WPA is supported, right-click on the wireless icon on the task bat (next to the clock bottom right hand corner) and select "View Available wireless network"). Now under "Related Tasks" select "Change the order of preffered networks" and click the "Add" button, and drop the menu down next to "Network Authentication" and see if an entry is listed fro WPA or WPA2 if its there then it supports WPA encryption.

ashok is correct. If the security method isn't listed, you'll need to update your wireless adapter driver. This is the case even with XP SP2 and SP3 installed.

Are you doing WPA or WPA2? If you're looking at AES, you want WPA2, and Windows XP SP2 requires a patch for WPA2 support.

 

If you're using a PSK, it's harder to see why it's not authenticating. If you can set up 1X and test with RADIUS, you'll see more info in the RADIUS log.

Yes, must have been the WPA2 patch, because as soon as I slapped SP3 on, it picked up WPA2 in the authentication list.... I always use the latest drivers because I download them before RISing..
