Video Editing for a whole classroom

The Multimedia teachers are looking at moving away from graphics to video.. They've rightly seen the issue that having 30+ pupils editing video could be too intensive on the system. The PCs in the classroom are fine, however the pupils storage is all on a DELL SAN in RAID6 that may complain under such a load. if that wasn't the issue then 30 plus pupils storing gigs of uncompressible video to be backed up will take too long or too much space. (pupils have 2gb of network storage currently.)

 

I can increase their storage quotas but the backup windows may get quite long on days after 30+ video edits have occurred. (backup is a raid5 HP server on 1 gig link, using vranger. backing up the whole VM incrementally)

 

BUT Pupils have massive online storage via OneDrive and we have a 1000/200 internet connection.. any cunning way this can be leveraged?

What software are they using, and how does the caching of the video files on the local drives work?

 

Surely your raid6 is faster than 200Mbits/second though.

 

1. They get some source files, needs to be backed up

2. They edit the videos, hopefully local caching works here

3. They save the EDL (small files, so not much of a problem)

4. The render the output and want to save that too

The user interface is web-based, pupils can use it from pretty much any device, including from home. WeVideo takes care of storage for projects you're editing and you can export finished items easily enough. It supports logins via Google and Office365. We found the pricing (per year) very reasonable - you buy a number of seats and assign them to users, I'm guessing you could buy enough seats to cover a class / yeargroup at a time if you didn't want to have to license the whole school all in one go.

We use a NAS box for this, works well. Connect to Domain, map a drive to the workstations.

That wevideo looks really good! This might be the ticket! I'll discuss with the teachers as it does alot more than just editing but the assignments, templates and stock footage!

 

Like it does the whole course requirements in 1 website!
