Not sure where I have read this or if I have just imagined it but....Is there a solution where the ID card printer , in conjunction with a particular piece of software, upon printing also activates the card to Paxton / SmartAdmin/TrustE (NRS Civica)

At present we print using Paxton and activate using TrustE which then talks to Paxton and Printing. (NRS Civica) a convoluted process.

Called Civica but got the impression I was speaking another language.

Yes.

In NRS world it is "Smart ID".

I don't know what Civica call it but my account manager recognised it's name and function when I spoke to them in December.

We have two Evolis Primacy's (one with mono ribbon, one with colour ribbon), both duplex.

I bought a Magicard 600 in summer as one of the Primacy's had been throwing a dicky fit, but a bit of TLC and magic fairy dust and it's sprung back into life better than it's ever been!

(ps - pay attention to the configured time delays between loading cards; that's what causes most problems as the printer tries to load next card whilst whilst the previous one finishes printing (after it's read the mifare).

So just to clarify. This printer also loads the mifare card > sends to Card exchange > which sends on to paxton / smartadmin etc? Our Magicard Enduro 3 e does not have this fucntion.

If you ignore SmartAdmin and Paxton for the moment.

CardExchange can use its own DB of users/cards, or it can interrogate and write back to an SQL or Access database.

As we/you use NRS, CE looks to the NRS SQL to "select * from sometable where PrintCard = 1" and displays 1 or more such records. You select the template (staff, student, sixth form...) and hit print.

CE then prints the card on the printer, reads the Mifare number as it does so, then writes back to the NRS database with the Mifare number.

Now SmartAdmin does two things:

1) It's the UI to tick which users need a card printing. You find a student in SmartAdmin, tick them, then hit print (which simply opens CE).

2) As it does now, whenever it detects a change to the Mifare card number, it syncs it to various places including Paxton and TrustE.

See below, me pretending to print my three IT team members.

When printing year 7 at start of the year, I sometimes dip into SQL and "update sometable set printcard = 1 where year group = 7"

Thanks for this it is very helpful. Did they set this up for you ? I just want to ensure i buy the right printer so that I can emulate this solution.

Having the printer activate the cards will save a load of time.

NRS set it all up for us when we bought it all - TrustE, SmartID and Paxton - all at the same time.

As I said above, I don't know how much Civica have taken on this, but they are certainly aware of it and know their customers use it from NRS times. Many of the NRS staff moved over to Civica but who knows now.

As long as the printer has an onboard (internally USB connected) Mifare reader then it should be fine. Note that you can't have the printer networked (ethernet/wifi) even if it has such ports as the smartcard reader needs USB. We have ours on a AnywhereUSB (https://www.digi.com/products/browse/anywhereusb).

Good Old NRS, they werent too sure whether I needed smartadmin installed on the workstation, eventually said no I dont. Bought new printer and CE software on top. They now say I do and quoted me £880 for the pleasure.

@howartp have you tried copying the smartadmin folder across to a new workstation and editing the config to match the server version? seems to work ok.

No, i've not got to a stage of needing to do that yet; different copies of Smartadmin are on each of the servers (inc a Win10 'server' VM) that have Paxton, TrustE, CardExchange etc on so I don't have it on any local workstations.

we have a magicard 360 rio. Absolute junk, super poor resolution, long print times.

Go for a Fargo if you got the money

We have a load of magicard stuff and find it not bad. Isn't resolution and speed comparable to similar priced units?

The best thing I've found with magicard is their customer service. We've had a unit 7 years old that they sent out free parts for repair on.

We've got a Magicard, still going strong despite being around 10 years old

Do you have any screenshots of that database config in CardExchange? Civica have installed SmartAdmin then said he didn't know what to do with CE so has left it to me, even though they quoted on being able to do it.

I've got the SQL login details, I just need to know what table or whatever to point CardExchange to?
