Hi all,

Just bought my daughter in KS1 a chromebook for xmas present as i know her school use google classroom/chromebooks and want to give her a head start and familiarise herself with them before she starts to use in school.

Ive been out the school IT support role for a few years now, so thought id ask you all.

Is there any apps/software you would recommend i install that she may use at school in the near future?

Would it be worth me asking the school if she has a school account i can link to, as she is probably to young to be given an account of her own at the moment.

Thanks in advance,

Not sure about apps, but the point you allude to about her being too young to have an account, it may be worth setting up Family Link where you control what she can access?

Yep done that. I was more talking about you can add also add a school account. Im not sure what extra this gives. I assume access to school email and possibly school published apps?

Yeah depends what the school is using really. If they have set up to push specific apps out to children then you will get these along with any policies etc.

Ask the school, see what they say. If it's any help, for comparison, for our Nursery to Y3 pupils, each pupil gets assigned a Google login account as soon as they join the school ("[email protected]"). We don't enable email until Year 4, though, and even then it's limited to whitelisted-only domains. The only ChromeOS app we currently push out when pupils log in is Securly, which handles filtering at the client side, so any children using their school account at home should get the same filtering as if they were at school.

Mostly, you shouldn't need to install any ChromeOS apps locally on your device, everything should, ideally, be web-based and accept your daughter's school account as a login.
