Hyper-V Cluster - VM Showing in Node Hyper-V Manager

Hi all.

 

Not sure how to explain this one, but found a weird issue after an outage over the weekend. Long story short, had to take both nodes of a two node Hyper-V cluster offline via a full host shutdown. Full hyperconverged setup using StarWind VSAN to replicate storage between the nodes.

 

When the cluster has come up and storage is synced, I've brought all VMs back online on one node whilst I troubleshoot the second. In this process I can see all the VMs in Cluster Manager and systems are running as normal.

 

However, I have noticed that the second node is listing some of the VMs in Hyper-V Manager. These VMs are powered off, but are references to VMs already running in the cluster via the other node. Not all VMs from the cluster are listed. I think it's just those that were running on the host before the outage.

 

I've never seen VMs show both inside and outside of the cluster at the same time. Has anyone else? If so, does anyone know how to remove the duplicates?

 

Trying to Google this one and drawing a bit of a blank.

Not encountered this particular thing. What's the status of your second node in the cluster (i.e. in the 'Nodes' list)? If it's not showing as up, that might explain why its Hyper-V service hasn't yet caught up with what the cluster is doing with the VMs.

Both nodes showing as up and look as normal from the cluster side of things.

Have you tried restarting the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service on the second node? That's normally a safe thing to restart, as it won't affect the actual running of any VMs on that host.
