[ipad] Management/Signing In

So, we have a bunch of iPads set up via Lightspeed. I can add apps easily enough but the blasted things are causing all sorts of problems mainly, I suspect, because they are using a guest account for logging in and so can't save locally.

 

Anyone got an easy fix for this?

If you're using Shared iPads then you're best off setting up classes and assigning those classes to the iPads. This will allow the students of those classes to sign into the iPad using their Apple ID as long as it's all been setup on the Apple School Manager side.

Not sure we have enough devices for class sets. (12 classes, 62 devices). So we basically need IDs for every student? How does that work in terms of local storage, and what happens if (as is inevitable) the same device isn't available for the next lesson?

That might be difficult with those numbers. You might have to come up with a system to book iPads out and make sure students try use the same iPad each time so that they don't sign into every iPad. This will depend on the size of your iPads storage. I knew they must have been guest accounts for a reason! Let's just say that they don't even use the current "book a box of 5" system. Anything more complex? Fuggedaboutit. I don't think they'd even sign out, so

 

In addition to having the ability to provide personalised experiences for each student, Shared iPad includes the option to deploy devices with a standard configuration that students can use for a temporary session without a Managed Apple ID. This can be helpful when using iPad in early year groups. When students have finished using the iPad, they can tap to sign out and their data is removed so that the iPad is ready for the next user.

Shared iPads always seemed like a cool prospect, but I don't think it ever really added much value where we put it in.

 

In the primaries we trialed creating 'class' accounts so that it stood a chance of caching all the accounts, in fairness this worked quite well.

ANY Apple "Shared iPad" deployment needs a caching Server, without one you're going to get lots of problems.

Might be worth setting them up as normal iPads and not shared iPads. The only issue with this is lots of students using them might mean they leave themselves logged into other services/apps. This is how we currently setup our nursery iPads but we only allow apps that don't require logins (so we don't push out google apps in case staff leave themselves logged in).
