can i test the speed of a network connection??

hello we have some pc's around the school that are painfully slow even though the same spec as others around that are lots quicker. ive done all various upkeeping like defrag, clean up, deleted local user profiles, turned off updates as this has lagged pc's before but still dead slow. im wondering if can test the network point and cable to see if these are running how they should. any other ideas would be great plz??

You would want to run it on your server and on your slow client, I have edited my above post with a tutorial that should explain it better. You may also want to run it on your server and one of the identical machines to get a base line of what it should be capable of.

Are there any other problems, like not picking up group policy? Just in case, I am including a link to a problem I had a while back, where machines had been given fixed IP addresses and there were missing DNS A and PTR records.

I maybe wrong but the first thing I do is ping the server from the machine, setting the buffer size to 65500 and count to 25. Compare that with a known good machine.

Is the machine slow even when run locally with a local username? or just when logged onto the domain?

 

Could always try removing it from the domain totally, and put it through its paces.

not tried on local admin but on network admin yes it is slow. they seem to run better after about 15 mins of doing nowt.

ping -t -l 65000 x.x.x.x

that will keep going till you stop it. to set it to 25 its

ping -n 25 -l 65000 x.x.x.x
