Urgent WSUS Problem

Hi,

Thanks to the Microsoft Printer cockup detailed in this thread, we really need to remove the updates in question.

 

Our existing WSUS server has no space, so we have had to stop it. I have done this by visiting services.msc and stopping WsusService.

I have then stopped the WsusPool in IIS>Application Pools.

I have also stopped WSUS Administraton in IIS>Sites.

The old server above is a 2016.

 

The new one we have set up is a 2019.

I have set it up as I usually would and I am constantly getting the following error:

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

 

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

I have followed all of the guides online to try and make this work.

1.Changing IIS>Application Pool>WsusPool>Advance Settings>Private Memory Limit KB to 0

 

2. (1) On your WSUS Server, launch the IIS Manager.

(2) Click 'Application Pools' is in the Connections list.

(3) Right-click 'WsusPool' and select 'Advanced Settings…'

(4) Increase the WsusPool 'Private Memory limit' x4 times, or set to 0 (unlimited).

(5) Change 'Queue Length' from the default 1,000 to 25,000.

(6) Save the configuration.

 

3. Restart IIS using the IISReset command-line utility

From the Start menu, click Run.

In the Open box, type cmd, and click OK.

At the command prompt, type

iisreset /noforce

 

 

 

Nothing works, I get the same error every time.

Why yet again does a Microsoft product not work? We have been put in an impossible situation. Old server has no room, have set up a new one, cannot use WSUS as it simply doesn't work. Microsoft have released these printer updates with no sensible workaround. We are now unable to remove the update as Microsoft's WSUS doesn't work. I am having to charge this school for my time and I am totally unable to get them any further forward. Absolutely livid about this situation. Does this company have any idea of the chaos it is causing?

Can you roll out the command line to uninstall somehow?

Can you use the WSUS cleanup script on the old server? It’s paid-for now, but it is worth that money. WSUS doesn’t need 10TB to work that way - it is fundamentally broken as you’ve seen. Maybe @mavhc is right now - time for WUfB?

In the meantime, to get that update off either try the cleanup script to get the old one working, or a removal script on startup as suggested.

 

Getting a new , hesitant server to commission at this stage is straying too far from the issue.

Thank you for all of your posts. Sorry for the slow reply. I caught covid and was off for some time.

We have given up and installed the printers manually on every single machine.

 

I have advised the school to move away from Microsoft and go with Google Workspace for Education. Absolutely sick and tired of the constant issues with Microsoft. These smaller primaries cannot afford to keep paying for extra time because the Microsoft products they have purchased do not work, so they will be moving to something more reliable from April.

We install 2019 and use AdamJ's WAM script. No issues for 3 years. We did have issues before that. As for the printer updates, then sensible workaround is to use a registry key to disable the need for an Administrator and then set a few other settings. With WSUS, you could at least block them. Without it, you just take what Windows gives you and you're stuck installing them manually. If you think Google Workspace doesn't have it's own issues, not sure what to tell you.
