MDT Moving Images

Hi All,

 

We recently had a new server upgrade and part of that they setup MDT from scratch. I had MDT setup on the old server which already had windows 8.1 images created. How to I move the Windows 8.1 image from my old server to the new MDT on the new server?

Import the OS as WIM file then re-create the Task sequence or copy the xml files of the task sequence on the old server to the new server overwriting the ones created in the new task sequence folder. If copying the xml file accross once this is done then go bac into the task sequence and point it tio the OS imported from the old server.

 

Then give it a test on a VM or a test PC to make sure deploys all good.

How can I locate the WIM file on the old server? Do I just go to the Deployment Share folder, then the operating systems folder, then the Windows 8.1 folder, the sources folder? There are 2 files with the WIM, one is boot.wim and the other is install.wim. Is it one of them or am I looking in the wrong area? I will just create a new task sequence on the new server once I have Imported the image.

You want install.wim - this is the OS install image.

 

Boot.wim is the Windows 8.1 boot image, if you've set MDT up on a new server you're probably not going to need this as you've likely added a newer (more up to date) boot image for clients to boot into MDT from as part of this process.

If the old share is still available then just add it into MDT as another deployment share.

 

Then you can just pick up the OS and drag it into your new DeploymentShare.

How would I do that?

In MDT right click "DeploymentShares" and "Open Deployment Share"

Type the server name and share in to the old deployment share (i.e \\Server-old\DeploymentShare$)

It may need to be upgraded via the wizard

 

They then both appear in MDT. Expand all the folders then simply drag the OS image from one Operating System folder to the other. And it'll copy it across
