RJ11 socket - can it be used?

Just my luck to be 1 network port short in a room & have discovered it’s been punched in as a phone port (RJ11 I believe).

 

Is there any use trying to get an adapter to connect a Cat5e RJ45 cable to it or is that a worthless cause? Is there differences in the cabling behind the socket to stop that working?

 

I can’t justify getting an install kit for just 1 socket so hoping for a cheap adapter for it but can’t find any!

Has it been wired with either cat5 or 6? If so you could remove the rj11 plate and replace it with an rj45 and the same the other end

 

The tools to do this are available on Amazon etc and are dirt cheap

I'm assuming wired with Cat 5 as at the other end at the server room / switch it's a normal Cat 5 patch panel. It was wired as RJ11 just for the old phones.

 

I've got some spare Cat5 wall sockets so that should be ok - was hoping for a small plug adapter though for handiness lol! Cheers though

You can get physical adapter cables/modules, but I thought RJ11 only went up to 6 cores while RJ45 is 8. If so there's a good chance it won't work for regular network traffic.

If it's wired correctly, it'd work fine for 100Mbps traffic, you only need 4 pins for that.

 

@SteveB_NI - Unscrew the RJ11 port from the wall and check what the cabling is like at the rear. If they've used Cat5e then just remove the RJ11 port and install an RJ45 port and ensure it's punched down correctly on the patch panel in the server room.
