failnator Posted September 13, 2021 Posted September 13, 2021 Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone else uses 4Matrix in there school and how you go about updating it? Currently we as techs have to go round and manually update it each time for each machine. Got me thinking there must be a better way then this. Many thanks
sippo Posted September 13, 2021 Posted September 13, 2021 We have scomis host our 4 matrix, but applied via GPO previously. Share the 4matrix folder to the users and will update automatically.
bald_pig Posted September 13, 2021 Posted September 13, 2021 I used to edit the folder to give staff edit permission, no ideal but it works.
haci Posted September 13, 2021 Posted September 13, 2021 Just on a shared drive here, shortcut for users. update it once.
networkmangler Posted September 13, 2021 Posted September 13, 2021 (edited) They released a new MSI with a new way of dealing with updates: update_help_new.pdf (4matrix.com) It seems to be working OK for us so far Edited September 13, 2021 by networkmangler
psydii Posted September 13, 2021 Posted September 13, 2021 Haven't reviewed it in a while, but we set permissions on the local folder to allow self-updating, but then use AppLocker to restrict execution there to appropriately signed exe's
Ian_Hawkes Posted October 26, 2021 Posted October 26, 2021 Good afternoon, We have an update guide at this link and you will only need the first page: https://www.4matrix.com/help/update_help_new.pdf Please note that 4Matrix do not actively monitor Edugeek for support. If you need further help, please contact us via our website Welcome | 4Matrix Online using Live Chat or log a ticket at https://help.4Matrix.com.
Fazza Posted October 26, 2021 Posted October 26, 2021 Doesn't 4Matrix update itself? Ours does, when you open up it checks for updates and if there are any it downloads them from the server 4Matrix is installed on.

It has been a few years but I believe you used to have to reduce security for this to work. Something like let staff run installers or even maybe be local admin. Im sure someone who has used it recently could confirm. Now, it looks like it can be done via a service to resolve this issue.

Yes, it downloads the updates (self extracting zip files with a .exe extension) to c:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Temp so it all depends on if you allow users to run .exe files from that directory. We don't, so each time there is an update we have to unzip the contents of the update .exe(s) and copy it to c:\Program Files (x86)\4Matrix I've not heard anything about updates being installed by a service and I've actually just rebuilt a PC with 4Matrix on yesterday so have gone through the process of updating it manually this morning (as our build process installs an old version of 4Matrix).
