Just did a fresh install of a sp3 slipstreamed XP pro OEM on my eee900. Install went fine, full install no nlite or anything.

Cannot seem to get Office 2007 to install. Every time it says

the windows installer service cannot update one or more protected windows files

Doesnt even let me install any of the individual programs from office or anything.. same error..

Any ideas?

If that does not succeed try this.

1. From Windows install disk, or c:\i386 that may have been set up in an OEM install, open (Double click) on the FP40EXT.CAB file. It should open.

2. find fp4autl.dll in the list

3. double click and select extract to c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin

4. Restart the 2007 office install

Let me know if that works

found that trick from google and was one of the first things i tried..

didnt work.. as soon as i copied the file accross windows popped up saying to put in my xp cd and it would fix the file that had just been created on the system, so I chose to ignore that and let the new file stay. The office install failed this time with a different error.

Cant remember the exact message

OK im not really sure what I did to fix it, but Ive got it installed.

After copying accross that file, and getting the error that windows protected files had changed, and the install failing, i rebooted, and then deleted that file. Windows again said a protected file had changed, so I popped in the xp3 cd and cclicked fix. Left the CD in the drive while running the setup, and it just worked.

Bizarre.

And suprisingly, it runs pretty fast and smoothe on the eee900
