password1234 Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Hi Guys Setting up a new domain / server 2019 (Host + VM for DC, VM for Data) for a small infant school, their old server they had was a bit messy left by the old provider so we got them a brand new sever and plan to create a brand new domain and start everything from scratch Its a very small school probably around 70 pupils and around 9 teachers + 2 admin staff My question is about Roaming Profiles + Folder Redirection + Offline Files (For their Home Folders only) Can never get this working correctly, so we thinking of just scrapping the Folder Redirection (With other schools we would normally Redirect Documents > to their Home Folder) and thinking of just leaving Documents folder and everything else locally Teachers use the same laptops all the time, likewise with admin staff remain static Just curious how do you guys setup this? do you guys use folder redirection? or do you just leave everything as it is?
3s-gtech Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Eeek, local documents? How will they be backed up? Encryption is straightforward enough, but what if the laptop breaks? If you're going that way, I'd suggest that you use OneDrive for their home areas. If you want to avoid that, stick to redirected documents on the server.
Jcx500 Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Don't leave files locally will cause you a world of trouble! 100 % either go with folder re-direction or look to move to onedrive/sharepoint

Yeh its one of those schools that already had documents saved locally and its one of those where "They dont want to change their ways of working" Bit of a struggle, but thats another discussion altogether! May try onedrive actually good suggestion!
3s-gtech Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 They won't really notice the change, yet you'll have most of the benefits of redirected documents plus lots of additional ones. Would certainly be the way I'd go if setting up afresh.
slugshead Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Few things to consider here... Restricting access to C kills the ondrive client from working correctly, but restricting access to C is one of the things you should be doing. The onedrive sync folder cannot be kept on a network drive/share. Big pain in the rear. Quick access cannot be redirected by GPO. You've got two options, provide guidance for users on how to change the path for the quick access pin or disable it with a reg key.
