Smoothwall Temporary ban not working?

Hello,

 

We've not used the temporary ban feature of Smoothwall in ages because of Covid. I have been asked to ban 3 students. I have added them in to the temporary ban but it's not working. I have also tried with a couple of test accounts that I have access to and those don't work either. Have waited overnight, tried multiple computers, etc

 

Perhaps I'm missing something really obvious bit I've simply followed these instructions:

Sorry to bring up an old thread, am trying to do this for the first time we've had Smoothwall since Sept and wanted to test something but a temp ban isn't working for us?!

 

Followed the steps and not working.

 

Is it domain\user or just user? Both don't seem to work here.

Do you have banned users at the top (or near the top) of the Manage Policies within Guardian?

The temp ban does override the users group membership and places the user in the 'Banned Users' group so a block for the Banned Users group need to be in place. This also means that the web requests have to be authenticated so make sure it's not because the user is browsing unauthenticated.

Oh strange under web proxy > Authentication Policies > Manage Policies > Transparent authentication policies, what is your method for authenticating?

 

Also the way I usually find how the user formatting is importing into AD (don't know if proper way but it does give it to you) check Services > User activity and it shows a list of users who are currently authenticated on the smoothwall as well as their username format.

Good idea to check if the user is actually logged in by looking at the user activity page in authentication. Often some content is excluded from auth in older setups so even if a user is banned, they would be able to access that content.
