Decide how to apply link-sharing security update to Drive

I just had that email too. When you go to the alert in the Admin Console it tells you how many files it will impact but not which files. Might cause some confusion with users!

Yeah, we just received the same message but it's incredibly obscure in that it doesn't really say what it fixes, what it does nor what specific files are impacted. Loads of folk complaining on the web about it :-

Appears to be related to files shared publicly via link sharing somehow so I guess the potential is that it could break files shared on websites/etc to parents and 3rd parties.

Possibly this option ? But I don't know the greater impact - when you hear the word security you usually want to apply it..

 

Remove the security update. Removing the update should only be considered for files posted publicly. There will not be an option to remove this security update from folders.

Google is doing something similar for unlisted YouTube videos too.

What does this mean for my videos?

Unlisted videos that you uploaded before 1 January 2017 will automatically be made Private. If you want your video to be Private, there’s nothing you need to do. Private videos won’t show in Public search results and viewers won’t see them in the “Videos” tab on your channel homepage.

Will your users know which option to take when the time comes? Google have not indicated what kind of message users will see so it's hard to judge how users will react to this. Could mean a barrage of tickets on your helpdesk when users don't know what it means or which option to choose.

I'm opting for the leave it alone and let them re-share when the time comes if they need access.

This update will change the links used for some files, and may lead to some new file access requests. Access to impacted files won’t change for people who have already viewed them, but others may need to request access. Details on the number of files, shared drives, and users that will be impacted by this update are below.

Think I will leave it on apply security. I think staff will just get in a muddle and I'll have even more of a cleanup operation, especially if they make the change for some files but not others.

Yup. It's a security update. If there is a problem with a file, we can deal with it as it comes.

Security comes first here, I'm afraid. I shall be leaving it alone. I'll let the automatic email on the 26th deal with communicating it to others.
