DWakely Posted June 11, 2021 Posted June 11, 2021 Hi all, I have been battling errors with SIMS for some time now and Capita/ESS haven't been able to solve and they have just given up. I've attached some of the errors, most common is the out of memory exception. This is only happening on the office manager and attendance managers accounts. I have swapped their PC's, re built, re imaged and reinstalled SIMS more times that I can count. This happens regardless of what machine they log into. PC's have 8GB RAM and they rarely go above 60-70% RAM usage and the server has loads of RAM spare also. I don't see its a physical out of RAM error. I wondered if anyone of you have seen this before and I would greatly appreciate the help!
Ictman1978 Posted June 11, 2021 Posted June 11, 2021 We sometimes get these errors, mainly when running or posting reports to parents or creating a number of PDF/Word docs from the Individual Reports section. We have found that if the user closes SIMS and reopens it every half hr or so when doing these tasks it never crashes. By far, not ideal but gets around the issue. Hope this helps 1
Grey-gear Posted June 11, 2021 Posted June 11, 2021 Hi @DWakely, Does this error happen at random or at certain times in the day? Dos the Sims server itself have busy spikes around the same time as the crashes?

As much as I'd like to tell them this is the solution, I cant imagine them being happy with it!
DWakely Posted June 11, 2021 Author Posted June 11, 2021 Hi @DWakely, Does this error happen at random or at certain times in the day? Dos the Sims server itself have busy spikes around the same time as the crashes? Hi, The server is hosting multiple schools databases and I would have though if it was server related the other schools would all be complaining also. There doesn't seem to be any time pattern to it but there is commonality that both users affected are heavily using the attendance and inTouch parts of Sims.

I agree with you, if other users from other schools are not effected it most likely not a server issue then. The computers that they are using have you increased the RAM in them to see if that fixes it? As @Ictman1978 suggested it maybe the best temporarily ask the staff having the issue if they can close Sims down every hour to see if this makes the issue happen less as it could be that Sims is not releasing RAM space after it has finished with it. Sorry if this has been no help 1

Sorry if this has been no help Thanks for you response, we have given them new machines with higher RAM in but I read this from MS website which kind of makes that slightly pointless: Before we cover the details of troubleshooting an OutOfMemoryException, it's important to understand what causes this problem. Contrary to what many developers believe, the amount of RAM that's installed doesn't impact the possibility of an OutOfMemoryException. A 32-bit process running on a 64-bit operation system can address 4GB of user-mode memory, and a 64-bit process running on a 64-bit operation system can address 8TB of user-mode memory, so an OutOfMemoryException on a 64-bit operation system isn't likely. It is possible to experience an OutOfMemoryException in a 32-bit process running on a 64-bit operation system, but it usually doesn't occur until the process is using close to 3 GB of private bytes. Correct me if i am wrong, but isn't Pulsar.exe still a 32bit app meaning it can only address a maximum of 4GB but get problems at 3GB? Could this just be a case of sloppy programming of memory clean up and garbage collection within the program itself? Thanks! Edited June 11, 2021 by DWakely
Grey-gear Posted June 11, 2021 Posted June 11, 2021 Where is Sims folder on the computers C drive? "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)"? When the school I worked at moved to 64bit OS's my boss got me to install sims to the "program files" folder to allow sims to use more Ram (i think) sorry again if this doesn't help

Seeing this suggestion got me thinking though... I've used this software called 4GB Patch to patch the Pulsar.exe to allow it to use more RAM. Who knows if it will work, only time will tell! Ill post back if it solved the issue or not. Thanks,
skyline_17 Posted June 11, 2021 Posted June 11, 2021 We had a similar issue a few years back and it was down to the size of the photos uploaded for the students and the exif infomation that was added to them by the camera
coolhands Posted March 1, 2024 Posted March 1, 2024 Thanks, its in the x86 Program Files. Seeing this suggestion got me thinking though... Thanks, any luck? I occasionally get this systemoutofmemory error too. Also yesterday after taking an age to generate individual reports to 'send' home, when it got to the InTouch screen it was black and non-responsice. Massive waste of time
