Staff personal devices - yes or no?

We have issued all staff with an iPad. However, it's coming to my attention that not all staff are using the school provided iPad, but their own devices.

 

For those of you that have issued staff with iPads / mobile devices, do you Allow them to choose between staff iPad or not using this and they can use their own device? or enforce they use their staff issued device, and that's it?

 

With Apple TVs now becoming common in all rooms I'm cautious of a personal staff device connected to the display showing some rather questionable notifications etc! Also - I don't like the idea of a staff issued iPad sitting unused in a cupboard.

We don't specifically prohibit staff from using their own devices but we have the network VLAN'd off so that staff personal devices only have internet access and are segregated other VLANs like the AppleTV one.

 

So that effectively discourages staff from being able to use their personal devices and they have to use the school issued ones for teaching generally.

I dont really understand this. The organisation has paid a lot of money for devices ipad/surface/chromebook in oder for staff to do their job. It's may get to the point where personal devices are blocked from Office 365 data via Conditional Access.

If you've given them all "work iPads" then I really don't see any issue with banning personal devices. (Or having them on a separate guest type network if you're feeling kind)

We discourage the use but do not stop them, if something is not working on a personal machine, we will advise them that we only support our own devices.

We discourage personal devices, but where people are insistent, then we ensure that they are encrypted, protected with a strong passcode and enrolled in one of our MDMs (either Meraki, InTune or Apple School Manager) so we can remotely wipe the device in case of theft.

Personal devices are a nightmare. They will want to use them, but they won't like you insisting on them having a pin code/fingerprint on it to protect the school data.

So then they'll complain about that requirement, so then you'll refuse them access, so then they'll complain about not having access...

 

It's best to say we provide you a device, you use that.

We allow personal devices in school on the guest VLAN. However, they're not used for teaching

The person who brings a personal device in to work that they use for personal use only and never mingles this device and work is a blessing. They have cracked the one weird trick to not flushing their career down the tubes and resulting with the head/governors having to go on local news to talk about a staff member’s questionable university party impression of an elephant or “experiment” with black face being shown to the students because a friend linked it to them on Facebook.

 

The person who uses their personal device instead of a work-provided device is begging for the above, or for you or the head to have to phone the ICO to report a data breach because of their stupidity. I’ve got no problem with personal devices, but it protects everyone if users are prevented from using them for work.
