Well, with a LOT of help from the community, I got our iPads set up using Lightspeed.

All seemed to be working as expected but, in the two months between their setup and actually needing to use the requested apps, did the teacher who was going to transform T&L with these actually bother to see if the apps worked as expected? (Rhetorical question).

Anyway, have one main problem: Pads are currently logged into as Guest, but this seems to preclude local storage and so using any media creator soon throws a disk space error. Is there a way around this?

If the way around is to sign in as something else

  1. How do I set up the account/s?
  2. Can they autologin?
  3. Can all pads use the same account?

Secondary problem: One (so far) pad did use to launch iMovie, but now keeps asking for an Apple ID. Any ideas? Fixed by reinstall.

Finally, is there a way to get OneDrive to autologin to a nominated account on them and to set it as default storage for iMovie and others?

As they are signed in as a Guest user I assume you have them setup in shared mode?

For shared mode to work properly, you need to create accounts for students/staff in Apple School Manager. You then sync the Apple School Manager data to your MDM. You can create classes in Apple School Manager and sync them to your MDM. You can then associate these classes to the bank of iPads you have. This allows the users in those classes to login to the iPad. They will need to set their own passcode.

You can't set them to login automatically.

I don't recommend logging the iPads in using a generic account as this opens up the risk of users sharing accounts or leaving themselves logged in and another user coming by and having access to their account.

Thanks. Yep, setup as shared.

Had a play - luckily it only goes through setup once/user!

(Probably) not a problem with account access as it's a Junior School, unless there are other ramifications. (Windows laptops for pupils currently autologon to a generic account - not my idea!). If we have to go down the multiple account route, though, does this eat up much disk space?

Are you greeted with a login screen (username and password) when you unsleep an iPad? This will determine if you have it in shared mode already. If it is in shared mode then you select the number of cached users in your MDM during the prestage enrolment. This will tell the iPad how many partitions to split the hard drive into. This will determine how much space each user gets when logged in.

If you set the maximum number of cached users to 4, it will split the hard disk space into 4 and allocate it to the users that login. If a fifth user comes along it will remove one of the other 4 users from the iPad. Their data should be synced to their iCloud account.

Yep. Thanks - makes sense to me; now I just need to explain it to staff.
