mrhall Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 We've a student (and I'm sure this won't be our last) who wishes to be "they" rather than "she". Can SIMS handle this? Peter
Ditto Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 We've a student (and I'm sure this won't be our last) who wishes to be "they" rather than "she". Can SIMS handle this? Peter I think you are right to expect this will crop up more as time goes by. The charity I work provides a lot of support services to Children and Young people, and that includes the LGBQT+ communities. Over the last year I have seen a massive increase in staff with email signatures that include "she/her/hers" or "he/him/his", "they/them/theirs etc. after the name and job role. I don't know about SIMS, but the question is valid for all MIS. I wondered what the census could cope with and the validation is as follows:

CS002 Gender

0 Not Known (gender has not been recorded). Also covers gender of unborn child.

1 Male

2 Female

9 Not Specified (indeterminate; unable to be classified as either male or female)

Any MIS supporting alternative pronouns is going to need to have a translation and that could cause some to be uncomfortable with the mapping. Perhaps DfE will expand their list in time.

PeterI'm not sure as we only have those that wish to to be the other sex that I've dealt with. Make sure that within Sims you keep the legal name (unless changed by deedpoll) and put new name in 'preferred'. It'll save embarrassment when emailing staff or parents as I found out!

Peter Did you get anywhere with this? We're in the same boat and surprised the DfE don't recognise anything other than M/F in the census.
paulkerton Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Let's not confuse sex, gender and pronouns. There is crossover but they're distinct. There is no reason you couldn't create a user defined field for the pronoun preference, I suppose - tho I think most MIS's should be attempting to include this these days.
a_masters Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 (edited) SIMS got back to me surprisingly quickly about this, along those same lines - treat gender as sex and create a new field for gender and pronouns. https://support.capitasoftware.com/csm?sys_kb_id=b2a721641b9b2010fe688551f54bcbc5&id=kb_article_view&sysparm_rank=1&sysparm_tsqueryId=816f4c501b7eb410fe688551f54bcb81 Edited September 20, 2021 by a_masters 1
