Cisco Meraki Systems Manager - MDM - device location error...

I know that the location part of this MDM is obviously unreliable due to our devices being Wi-Fi and therefore only having IP addresses to estimate their whereabouts...

 

But quite a few of them are showing as being in Africa somewhere (a default map I guess when it doesn't know where the device is).

 

Anyway they are not in Africa (I checked them and they are in a classroom)... I tried to update the location as half of the other devices are showing the school's approximate location, so I thought it just needed a bit of a kick.

 

It didn't change and looking through the 'Activity Log' I spotted this:

 

May 13 14:16 Request Device Location Error: No APNS token for the app May 13 14:16

 

All our tokens for the MDM and Apple are fine, up to date and tested.

 

The Meraki Systems Manager app is also up to date.

 

Anyone know what the problem is?

When you open the meraki app on the device do you get everything showing as connected and working, has the Meraki app been given the correct permissions in privacy to be always allowing precise location?

I'm not sure... they have all been working at some point in time but I rarely check. It's only that I was doing something else and it caught my eye.

 

I was hoping it would be a hands off procedure as I don't think I can even get into those settings with the restrictions on.

If it's iPads, can you re-enrol them on Meraki? Does that work? Had this issue with a few of the older iPads but re-enrolling them worked.

 

Don't forget to go into general > device management and remove the Meraki profile, otherwise the new profile will refuse to install.

 

Also, in privacy > location > set to "always"

How old are the ipads ? Some very old models don't have GPS and rely on WIFI external ip address to get the location info.

 

Also it looks like Apple end user privacy paranoia might have something to do with it as well (see Forcing GPS Location in link below)

If you have a static external Ip address you can add it to the location settings so that the ios devices show up as being in the right location if on the school network.

Set in Systems manager > Configure > General > Network locations
