Sibelius Vs. Musescore

Has anyone transitioned Sibelius to MuseScore here at all?

 

We've got both here and music department are insisting on a new purchase of Sibelius even though it would costs thousands of pounds in annual licensing fees.

 

MuseScore is free and looked good on a trial I did with it but I am not an expert in it.

 

Does anyone know the difference?

Ask them to pay for it instead of buying musical instruments or whatever else they spend money on.

 

If they want to use their budget, fair enough. There's nothing that you'd do for GCSE/A Level that musescore can't do though.

Don't forget that Sibelius comes with a fairly large orchestral sound library. That's a hurdle that might have to be overcome with a move to musescore if they like the Sibelius sounds.

Yes, our Music dept switched to Musescore from an old edition of Sibelius. We had fun converting existing Sibelius resources to Musescore. Some things got a bit mangled or made unpretty in the conversion process, but on the whole it was good enough. Not my area of expertise at all, so I couldn't tell you anything much more specific about how the two compare. I definitely think they would prefer a new version of Sibelius, but the cost makes that a non-starter.

 

On the plus side for Musescore, lots of the students already had it on their computers at home anyway, so they're now more easily able to work on things outside of the classroom.

Ours like Musescore as the students can easily go home and carry on with compositions. The lack of sound library is obviously an issue - however even that is obscenely large and I've had to start deleting it from our Macs as the HDDs ran out of space. Sibelius licensing is utter agro too.

 

It's a no-brainer really.

That why the open source versions will win, same with Blender, they're already using it, 99% of 3d tutorials on youtube are for Blender

Our Head of Music has been using MuseScore with his students over the last few months when they have all been working remotely, now I've been tasked with installing it on the Windows 8.1 computers in the Music Computer suite which is going to be 'fun' as on the first machine I did a test install on it just errors out when you run it!

 

The fact that it's Open Source has meant no issues getting students to install it on their computers at home so they have all been able to continue studying music whilst the Schools were 'closed'.
