Registering for a .ac.uk domain name

Could anyone clarify this for me,

 

We are a large secondary school with 400+ 6th form students, when asking JISC to register for a .ac.uk domain name i was told by a phone operator at JISC that we need to be a primarily based 6th form school in order to register.

 

Days prior to the call I submitted an application for a .ac.uk domain name and we paid the fee for it.

 

Thinking it would be rejected I dismissed pursuing the application process and now when I login to my domain name registrar the .ac.uk domain name is now appearing in the control panel.

 

Has anyone else in a secondary school managed to get a .ac.uk name? or have I managed to register one by mistake?

I think .ac.uk domains are for further education establishments. Schools (including those with further education provision) are usually either on .sch.uk or their own private domains (.co.uk, .com, etc).

We got .ac YEARS ago, before they tightened up the criteria to (normally) FE.

I got one around 2008. The justification was the school ran lots of adult computer classes.

Still got it; I doubt they would try to change something established.

ac.uk are usually reserved for FE, HE and occasionally I've seen them used with Adult Education establishments.

So, you might get one if you do have a Post-16, but usually they stay with their school domains.

My understanding is that they are supposed to be for Further and Higher Education - a lot of academies think that .ac.uk would look better on their letterheads thinking the .ac parts means Academy.

You can actually register .academy domains now.
