In a bit of a position where just could do with a bit of information on what to expect? if you'd like to Private message instead that would be great!

Depends on the size of the school and the amount of devices, if its a onsite solution or hosted...standard primary school for onsite firewall and filtering about £600 a year.

Thank you @yac2016 can be either hosted or onsite no prefrence really. No more than 150 workstations, 80 chromebooks.

That cost isn't as bad as i first feared though.

No worries, depends if you want full access to your firewall and filtering appliance, with a hosted solution you may be prone to having issues you can't fix yourself.

The only changed we've needed more recently is when changing things like CCTV and that needing access through the firewall.

"cost of hardware" for pfsense, snort and pfblockerNG. Just get something like an old Rx20 or Rx10 with a few network cards then run it in a virtual machine so you can easily backup the VM or move it to new hardware without much downtime (just remap the network connections). £300 each refurb - you could buy two and put them in a HA setup if you have enough IPs etc. We use a cold spare instead. If you are still running "onsite services" then combine with something like DNSMadeEasy to switch over your public side to your backup internet line. Edited by KK20

There some other factors to bear in mind in terms of sizing/performance etc, i.e:

What features will you be using -if you're utilising the advanced stuff (IPS, Https inspection, Antivirus, Threat Protection, Application Control, nature of reporting/storage etc) these will have an impact on performance

What size internet connection are you using, do you have/want resilience/failover?

VPN remote access?

Are you looking to buy outright and manage yourself, or take a managed service/spread the cost?

Do you have any off-site filtering requirements?

Not rocket surgery, but on-premise appliances vary in terms of features, quality, support, performance etc - I'd be happy to provide info and options and pricing anytime, just drop me a mail or PM,

cheers
