There is absolutely no asset tracking here whatsoever either, its unbelievable really.

 

There was none here, apart from the school main office! Theirs is a joke but every so often they will send a sheet around asking for any IT stuff, and I think haha what am I going to do with this. They will get a printout off me (bloody long one) but not sure if they use it.

Then you got our Science department with theirs, in fact who insist on trying to do everything theirselves (including ordering IT stuff and setting it up!), hell why get me involved Doesnt take long though before I get called.

Set my own up a few years ago and it has been in build since (a few access tables linked up with lots of querys) is really accurate these days!

It has always been me who pushes it though, so apart from that there is no real accurate asset database ever been insisted on!! Mad really. You can always dig out all the invoices!

 

Had audit in recently, gave them the database.

 

 

Worst jobs - Well has to be people stuff -

Worst job has got to be dealing with management!! Im thinking to myself hmmm you really shouldnt be getting involved in the IT stuff should you, just tell me what outcome you want!

Forget recognition and appreciation of workloads, at least here!

 

Dealing with teachers is a PITA but im used to their self-important attitude these days.

 

Managing trainee techs can be a PITA sometimes too!

i must change about 15 mice a week, no win situation glue the balls in they get full of fluff ect, dont glue them in and the miceballs go missing, it espcially annoys me when the kids go round unplugging and swaping mice in the ICT suites bending all the pins in the process, then just throwing them down the back of desks when it wont go in,

 

we are slowly trying to replace them all with usb optical mice tie wrapped to the power and vga cables so hopefully this should be a problem of the past in a few months

Hey, your right this is a most annoying job, especially when its that amount of mice that are going missing, I would have to have words wth some of the teachers to ask why they are not seeing these mice going missing?

its not too bad in the ict suties that have a perminent teacher they seem to look after stuff a bit more, but we have a shared suite that everyone else uses, its a pretty bad layout though there is 5 pods with 6 computers on so its a little difficult to see them all,

No I live in wath just up the road on the right hand side near the speed camera from the HUGH Secondary in Wath, I went to that school many years back before it was BSF'd and turned to the Dark Side.

 

I work in Pontefract at The Kings School as well as many other schools, where ever Im needed really could be Pontefract one day and Leeds the next who knows?

Much better, they still get 'ripped' off PCs here in some place. IT suites are looked after well here becoz of the room owner thing.

Simple things like mice/keyboard unplugged are a big irritant - doubly so when on an RM One (don't even go there!!) and you're trying to get one swapped out, get the back off, oh bugger it's one where the screws gone - etc.

 

Or anything in our admin office - which is a nightmare of wires here there and everywhere, wires diving behind cupboards and up walls... nobody really knows what's where!

Answering the telephone!

 

Usually someone either wants a job doing hence I have to direct them to the helpdesk system or some company rings trying to flog something!

 

I would be quite happy without a telephone ringing in my ear all day...

Any job that requires me to go around 30 or more PCs instaling something individually, i have ghost cast etc but sometimes it just fails and things have to be done manually

 

"fixing" web settings, in other words people who can't do the simple task of typing "login.staffproxy" in order to get unfiltered internet access (south west grids new implementation :/)

 

projector filters and toners are annoying too, but all our printers are managed now so we can see everything that needs or will need doing via web interface, and projector filters we make a habbit of cleaning as many as possible during holidays just to ensure we dont have to sort them throughout the year (plus some teachers have learnt to do it for themselves )

I really cannot say there is anything I dislike doing, but if I had to choose I'd say trying to trace patch leads around an office and all included furniture to find out which network point they plug into. I have something that may help with that. When we were having a similar problem a couple of years ago I authored an MSI that, once installed, would call delprof at every system boot and remove any profile that had not been used in 60 days or more.

 

You can alter the number of days using a transform file on the MSI if needed (change the AppParameters row in the Registry table).

 

Worked fine for us, but YMMV, so use at your own risk.

Yeah have thought of using that, but we use an RM system and I beleive it will delete the RM Default user profile which means that they wont be able to log on without us copying over another profile to the machine. (I think) Anyhow I mentioned this to the NM for testing but I don't think it was well recieved :s

 

Anyhow back to deleting

As I understand it the RM default user is a local user, correct? If so, you can configure delprof to only remove cached roaming profiles, which you would do in the MSI by adding /r into the AppParameters as I mentioned above.
