Chromebooks on BT WiFi Hotspot

Has anyone had issues with Chromebooks connecting to BT WiFi hotspots?

 

We've loaned a Chromebook to a student to use at home but when they click the BT WiFi hotspot, it doesn't load the browser page to enter their BT login. So they can't properly connect to the internet, and therefore, can't log into the Chromebook.

 

I suggested briefly tethering to their phone to get logged into the Chromebook and then switch back to the BT one. But they are PAYG and said they can't tether.

Why are they connected to the public hotspot and not the private SSID?

BT have given away free BT WiFi vouchers to schools to provide internet to those families that don't have access.

 

I had a similar issue with the redirect going to gstatic.com, not had a chance to investigate it yet though.

Well according to the Gov page about how the different internet access schemes they were doing (BT, 4G, data increase etc), they stopped their pilot with the BT Hotspot vouchers back in December as most couldn't get a reliable enough connection (https://get-help-with-tech.education.gov.uk/internet-access#bt-wifi) so not too shocked if they are having trouble. I have problems enough if I try connecting via my phone to my own BT Wifi hotspot. I wanted to test it out, and was next to useless even on my 80mb Halo package

Because they don't have home WiFi. So they're trying to login as detailed here- https://m.businessdirect.bt.com/Images/vendors/bt/ED-1059314-free-wi-fi-landing-page/BT%20Wi-fi%20User%20Guide.pdf

 

But the Chromebook isn't loading the BT login page, so they can't get as far as logging into the Chromebook.
