Guest Guest Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 We've recently issued our staff with laptops which have always on VPN configured. However, they randomly fail to connect to the VPN Server. I've been remoting onto them, removing the profile and re-adding which seems to sort the issue. This just happened on mine and I was able to manually restart the connection using rasdial so it's not a server/connectivity issue. Has anyone else experienced this? If so how did you resolve it? We're running Windows 10 Education 1909 and the VPN Server is Server 2019 Standard Any help is greatly appreciated
synaesthesia Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Lots of variables - ISPs and router settings vary often. "Port clamping" and family safety settings are the biggest culprits we've found on the staff members' router - and indeed we've had this cause intermittent connection issues rather than just not working all the time. We've also had staff members struggling as their connection is too slow (22kbps a record so far) or they have decent download speed but latency numbers are just diabolical - 500ms latency with a 12mbit connection isn't acceptable in any line of work. Fiber, apparently! Also some DNS providers seem to have a bit of a paddy, setting people to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 has often done the trick - again, a router-side job though otherwise you break things when they come back to work 1
Guest Guest Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 This doesn't appear to be a connectivity thing, when checking the logs on client side there is nothing relating to starting the connection after a reboot on the effected devices. When starting the connection manually entries appear in the logs
synaesthesia Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Ah I see - is the VPN profile correctly installed? quickest check if it's always on and device level is powershell cmd get-vpnconnection -alluserconnection
Guest Guest Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Yeah it's correctly installed. It was working it just seems to randomly stop on random laptops. I'm thinking it's something to do with the registry setting documented here https://msendpointmgr.com/2020/04/29/keeping-always-on-vpn-always-on/
RobD Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Anything in the event log indicating its failed to connect?
Guest Guest Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 No nothing, when it starts successfully log entries are present. It's as if it's not attempting to start the connection
synaesthesia Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Hmm, thats an interesting page - missed that one when I was diagnosing those faults but not sure if it applies to us as we're doing it all via the artist formerly known as Intune.
MatthewL Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 I have an issue with my AoVPN if my internet drops I have to physically disable my WiFi on my laptop leave a minute then reenable before the VPN will reconnect.
