ntuser.man - removing a setting

Good Morning (on this joyous monday morning),

 

Reference older requests, we have approximately 1/10 users having this problem. That problem being older isdncache.rmplc.co.uk which was used over 3 years ago as primary proxy, however everything is now in house with ISA etc.

 

Ranger is set to stick the ISA settings as WCSISA:8080 but using Windows Grep, I found that ntuser.man references the isdncache settings. Easy fix to just change ISA settings, but not when its every morning. This problem only affects some users, not all.

 

I do believe that ntuser.man holds registry settings (renamed from .dat) Is there a way to remove the isdncache registry setting?

Rename it to .dat log on as user that can access it, remove setting, log off, change back to .man?

You can also load NTUSER.MAN as an additional hive in reg edit and edit it that way.

Althought it does work, the only way is to overwrite the current settings, than re-export it as a hive file.

 

I may have just accidentally imported the hive onto my admin machine, perhaps a logon/logoff will make things better. However even importing the file, I cant find reference to the isdncache registry setting, however windows grep still shows the syntax within the file.

Load up ntuser.man in Mitec Registry File Viewer (RFV) - handy tool for loading registry fragments/profiles offline. You won't be able to edit it but you should be able to check easily where in the tree the setting is hiding...

I just load the .man file as a hive under HKLM, make my changes, and unload it again. Job done.

 

Be aware that while you have the hive loaded, nobody else can log in using that profile until you're done.

I accidentally loaded under HKCR, instead as a hive under HKLM. And alas your idea does work, and the issue with the older proxy settings resolved.
