Hi,

A few months ago I got a visit from a gentleman from Tulip. Most of the stuff we said was rubbish but he did mention a computer that they sell which is used as a video server. It had several tv tuners that record tv programs, a satelitte input to record sky and huge hard drives to allow everything to be stored at once. All the schools videos and dvd's are digitized and every member of staff have all the schools resources available to them.

He did mention it is based on open source software so I want to do it on the cheap :D

Has anyone got something similar. We have a M$ schools agreement in place so I would get sharepoint for cheap but I am not sure if that fits the bill anyway.

It's probably a Mythtv box. You can do all sorts of clever recording and streaming stuff with them. You also set recordings up using web based interfaces and stuff. I've just got one set up at home, but i've not had chance to play with it yet.

Probably mentioned this in the other thread, but I know of a local school who had Tulip in to do network stuff and "didn't do a very good job of it".

Tulip upset me and my NM when they came in a while back to "assess" our network. They came in, talked to me for about an hour about our network structure and server roles. They said that the network was one of the best planned and maintained networks they had ever seen in a school. They went away and promised a report on our network and recommendations for improvement.

Well, all I can say is that the report must have been written for another school. They got several facts wrong in this report (such as our server brands and AV solution). They basically recommended that we tear up the network and start from scratch using their goods and services. Suffice to say we told them where to stick it.
