Want to get a better Graphics Card, can you advise please?

Hi all.

Need an advise guys.

 

What to get a better graphics card which supports at least 4k resolution.

 

This is what I have at the moment:

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 3 Intel Skylake ATX

CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0GHz

RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4

Graphics Card: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB

 

PSU: RMi Series RM1000i 1000W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply (CP-9020084-UK)

5700xt is fine but I want to get a 4k monitor at some point next year when I will be able to purchase PS5 to enjoy both - PC gaming and PS5 gaming

 

Can someone advise please?

4k in what - the newest games? RTX 3070 and 3080 (and 3090) if you’re bothered about RT, and AMD 6800 XT and 6800. RTX 2080 Ti also capable if going a bit older.

 

These are all expensive cards - but 4k in the latest games demands it and you already have a good card, so this is the step up.

TBH, 4k monitors can be picked up for a very reasonable price now (circa £200 for low end ones) and that may be a good step to go to before getting a card as I don't think there is going to be any reasonable stock levels of new gen cards until at least late Jan/early Feb

Obviously I misread your post - monitor! What I wrote still applies of course, but your card will manage at a step down in settings.

 

With the monitor, think of the features you want. Adaptive sync should be there whatever you get now, but high refresh, panel type and size all massively vary the cost. 27-32” seem to be the trending sizes. With your card, you may find a QHD screen in those sizes works out better.

I believe Dos Box did answer your question the XT and the X Trio appear to be the same, the only difference is really the manufacturer. Personally I would go with MSI as I have never heard of PowerColor, but other may be able to provide better knowledge of their quality or further insight.

Not quite the same. One is a pre-overclocked RX 6800 XT while the other is just an RX 6800.

'Trio' is MSI marketing speak for three fans. You will also find NVIDIA cards from them with 'Trio' in the name, in addition to 'Gaming X' cards with two fans, 'Gaming Trio' cards without an X and XT Gaming X Trio cards. I am sure it all makes sense to someone!

 

I believe 'XT' stands for eXTreme. AMD couldn't use 'Extreme' since Intel was already using it.

 

I have never heard of PowerColor

PowerColor is a popular manufacturer of AMD graphics cards. They have been making them for a really long time (since before ATI was owned by AMD).

 

They don't produce any NVIDIA graphics cards which probably explains why not many people have heard of the brand.

At the current moment in time, there isn't a graphics card available to buy period.

You won't get a 6800XT for anything under £800 which is silly money, even Geforce 1050's are hitting £200 and that's frankly ridiculous. The only slither of hope is a preorder for a geforce 3060 - scan have one listed at £299 but you've more chance of winning the lottery than bagsying one of them!

Still, I'm considering selling my GTX 970, it's value at the moment is double what I paid for it!

Depends on the fault - if it's something like a damaged component or trace due to mishandling or physical accident, just about any electronics repair place will be able to do that. If it's a suspect GPU issue, then it's bin-time by which point you stand to lose nothing by sticking it in the oven to get between an hour and a year's more use out of it.

If it's a 1060 of any flavour, just bin it - I haven't read into it yet but a brief look around fleabay shows there's clearly issues with them due to the sheer amount of faulty ones about (and they won't have been used for mining)

It’s a 1070 but I suspect it’s a component issue. Do you know any places from experience you could suggest?

Be careful with monitors for the PS5, brother has a high refresh rate one and the ps5 wont play with it above whatever the default is or at 4k...
