mrstrong Posted November 27, 2020 Posted November 27, 2020 I'm trying to pxe boot a hyper-v machine from my wds server (hoping to install windows 10 via wds) but get no response Tried gen 1 and gen 2 vm's I'm running hyper-v on a PC with only one network card, any ideas? a real physical PC pxe boots fine.
Katy Posted November 27, 2020 Posted November 27, 2020 (edited) Think you need a gen 1 VM with a legacy network card (different to a normal network card). Edit: Although no response sounds like you've got it to at least attempt PXE boot? What kind of virtual switch is it connected to? Mine are set as "External". Edited November 27, 2020 by Katy
meakjoe Posted November 27, 2020 Posted November 27, 2020 I've used a Gen2 Hyper-V before, booting into UEFI PXE boot with SCCM with no problems. Think SCCM uses WDS as its pxe boot provider.

Ah yes that was it - if you use Gen 1 you have to faff about with a legacy adapter and it does the "standard" PXE boot ("Press F12"), if you use Gen 2 you use UEFI PXE boot ("Press Enter"). Been a while since I did the exam on that 1

Have you got the wds server on a different network than the VM? Are clients that are working OK on the same network as the VM If not check to see if you need an ip helper address for the WDS server on that vlan as well as your normal DHCP servers. Jcx500 Posted November 28, 2020 Posted November 28, 2020 If your host is on a vlan you will need ip helpers
mrstrong Posted November 30, 2020 Author Posted November 30, 2020 .... What kind of virtual switch is it connected to? Mine are set as "External". thanks, this was the quick fix. Hyper-v had set up a "Default Switch" of type "internal" that my VM was using. MS docs say "default switch gives VMs access to network using NAT". but maybe the PXE boot / DHCP process won't work in this default NAT scenario Anyway, I created a new External Switch (with allow management OS to share) and changed VM to use this.
mrstrong Posted November 30, 2020 Author Posted November 30, 2020 ... also went with a gen 1 VM (i.e. legacy/bios). Am I right in thinking that if I do a capture in WDS I will get a wim image file that is independent from the boot type of the guest VM? e.g. so that I can use it with uefi booting laptops as well?
chazzy2501 Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 I can never get GEN1 machines to PXE boot, only GEN2..
chazzy2501 Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 thanks from 2024 :)make a new external switch... got it. 1
