Editing/Submitting PE coursework

Hi

 

Our head of PE has just been to see me about submitting PE coursework. Students are going to have to record their own videos demonstrating skill, edit in school and then submit to the exam board.

 

As usual no guidance apart from it needs to play in VLC! How what does everyone else do, or are planning to do?

Depends, but some combination of ipad/webcam, upload to OneDrive then use iMovie / Windows Video editor / Premier Pro (for those students who were exposed to it through other courses). Then published completed works in planet estream secured via categories.

Usually we'd use the PE iPads and then have the teacher record them and upload it to their Google Drive. I've not heard anything about having to edit the videos though? I think the PE teachers themselves might do that but suppose it depends on the exam board?

I've not heard of Planet Estream before, I presume it's a paid service? Do you know how much?

Our PE staff have always got them to edit (don't know why) which they can do via Movie Maker but it's the size of the files that is causing me concern. How do you submit to the exam board? Do they share from their GDrive? We're OCR who have given hardly any guidance...

This causes me a headache every year and has done for about 10 years now.

 

I created a 100GB share and gave PE students access to it, where they can dump their raw video files and edit them in school. How they obtain their video is up to them - I have some Handycams that can be loaned out to staff, sometimes the teachers take these and arrange recordings during lesson. The PE Dept have some iPads that they can choose to use. Or, under special arrangement (signed forms etc), the kids can use their mobile phones under supervision.

 

In more recent years they seem to like editing at home, as their iPads, iPhones etc have slicker and quicker methods of producing the video. From experience, they need to only show the content (such as the technical skill they're trying to demonstrate) usually with a quick voiceover and a brief title card at the start of the clip. If they do it this way, they upload to their OneDrive and share with the teacher. Not a lot of technical skill or polish is required on the videos.

 

One year we had so many GCSE students that one of their timetabled lessons was reserved just for me to show the class how to use editing software as the PE staff were having a mare.

 

I believe last year we sent the final clips via encrypted USB. If the file sizes look too big, I tell the staff to tell the students to use a lower resolution.
