Hello!

Hope you are all well.

I could really do with some help.

Google classroom - pupils can see teachers emails and we want to prevent it.

As a pupil

1. go to class.

2. click on people

3. next to the teachers name is an envelope and if you hover over it ... it displays the teachers name

If you have outlook setup then it would start a "new mail" to the teacher.

Any way to block the envelope?

Hope that makes sense.

Why on earth would you want to stop students from seeing the member of staff's work email address? Unless you're using randomly generated addresses it'll be guessable anyways.

Parents help children on google classroom and they think it is ok if they email the teachers. :ohwell:

It has already happened... thus we want to remove it... hopefully that makes sense?

I think what you'd be best doing is blocking students from emailing teachers on your email system.

If you're all Gmail then this is easily done.

If parents are emailing from personal addresses maybe there's something to be done with automatic replies if you already know the parents address. Otherwise you just need to make it clear (website, letters home, policies) that parent enquiries need to go via this route/process. Any direct communication with teachers via email will be ignored.

Send a letter, put it on your website etc etc that staff will not reply to parental emails.

In this time of working from home, blended learning etc do you really want to stop students emailing staff from their school accounts?

We don't allow emails from students to teachers anyway. Gmail app is disabled. Classroom only for the moment.

Some parents think it is ok to email teachers and this could cause complications.

I just thought there might be a way to remove the envelope...and someone here might have done it.

Wow, students can't email teachers from their school account? That's totally ridiculous.

Once again even if you could remove it their email addresses are likely to be easily guessable.

You are searching for a technical solution to a problem that is not technical.

I agree, Whilst i do wish there was a "nickname/Class Name" field i could populate that would show in classroom to apease the complaints about names/respect etc... not that i agree with it but i can see why

Isnt email the perfect medium for parental communication ? its all logged and auditable - no words in your mouth or lies? i dont know why you would stop a child emailing staff though, our pupils are internal/whitelist only

Students can comminicate to teachers through classroom.

As a part of the curriculum they will need to email depending on year group.

This is a primary school.

When the kids need to email as a part of the ICT lesson gmail will be enabled.

It is better to control and gradually allow access. Learn in phases.

It is better to not overly lock down valid methods of communication - fine teach them how to use email but locking it off until you get to those lessons is a massive overreaction. As is panicking because teacher emails can be seen.

We had teachers moan about full names on google. Teachers can change their names on profiles from say Tom Jones to Mr Jones.

This propagates throughout the system to google classroom however in the directory (which staff only have access to) they appear as Tom Jones.

Enabling Gmail for children gives them full access to the directory and to remove them you have to go to each child and remove from directory.

Not true, Use a custom directory and you can chose who/what gets populated to the auto complete using groups in a couple of clicks.

The default directory is autopopulated though right? it used to be unless they changed it.

Custom Directory is different.

When you apply these it overrides the default "see everything" setting from what i understand - it resolved our issues atleast.

You would set kids to see nothing, and staff to see all staff/kids/theirclass depends how granular you want it to be

I should add, if you dont use something like wonde/salamander to populate a Staff/Pupils group you should look into GAM for that and just run it on a nightly task or something

Yeah that's valid, that's why our username format for students is different to that of staff and quite distinctive.

Its more the full names getting completed than the email - the kids are ForSur#@ staff are forename.surname.

I think if you anonymise the actuall names on the accounts in the directory it makes them a bit useless?

Agreed, the directory has massive value - disabling it or crippling it by changing names etc will make it pointless.

Hello everyone.. thanks for all the help on this one.

Issue was resolved by disabling directory for children. Envelope went away.

Also, staff are allowed to change their display name from say Indiana Jones to Mr Jones. Change restriction pushed to allow this from google admin. They can click on profile and change display name which propagates into google classroom.

I know this seems crazy but it was asked and delivered... hopefully the info here helps someone else. The name in the directory stays the same so it is a win win for all.

Thanks again!

keep safe.
