ITGURU Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 I have 1 Dell server Poweredge R515 which I inherited from a merge , which eats more hard drives than the 12+ bank of HP servers I have. The server has space for 3.5" drives. I've just ordered a replacement drive and was delivered with a 2.5" drive in a 3.5" caddy. I went back to the supplier about this and they have been told that this is what Dell are now doing called a 'hybrid' drive. Seems a bit weird to me, but does anyone else now have a mix of 2.5" and 3.5" drives in their server? Why have they stopped making 3.5" drives?
ticktock Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 Yep, we had a couple of seagate drives fail in a Dell server (not both at once!) under warranty and the Dell replacements were 2.5in in a 3.5in caddy.
6Foot2 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 We have been seeing this for a while. I can't remember when it started but it's easily over a year ago. Our server is old. We have extended warranty cover to its limit: The server in question is now seven years old, and we cannot get cover for it next year.

Dell have been replacing with 2.5" for a couple of years at least, my last two - ST3600057SS - have been replaced with 2.5" drives -AL13SXL600N (judging by DELL OPENMANAGE - I'm not opening her up - and I still have one in there hanging on). But I didn't even question it for some reason, I think I knew it was a thing as years (and years) back my Raptor in my home machine got replaced by a funky little thing...
