iPads Legality of Ownership means unrestricted access?

Hi All,

 

We have literally just rolled out our first iPad scheme to the first year group.

Many parents opted to buy the iPads fully with one payment instead of doing it monthly.

All the iPads are managed by an MDM until the end of the scheme.

 

One of the deputy heads has claimed that legally the kids with the fully paid iPads should have unrestricted access to the iPad at home.

This obviously has issues where the kids can download whatever they want at home and its there on their iPads in school.

I've been in touch with our MDM but they can't do a scheduled restriction service (restrictions off at home and then back on again in school).

Currently I have asked for the App store to be blocked at all times.

 

Just wondering how others get on and if legal stuff is correct.

We're looking at this as well but the initial thoughts are if the device is being used on the school network AND the devices are being supported (hardware, software faults) by the IT team in the school, then they need to remain compliant with the config that they are handed over to the student with for the entire duration they are being used on site (even after the 3 years); so as soon as the config changes, the devices are no longer compliant and you can no longer support them.

 

From the safeguarding point of view. If they save untoward images onto the devices when they're unrestricted and then bring them in to school - this would bypass the restrictions.

 

TL;DR if they're accessing the schools network, they need to be compliant

Did you not have an agreement the parents signed before paying/taking possesion of the iPad?

Presumably the school bought the ipads VAT free?

The school gets the VAT off because they are educational devices not so students can install what they want when they are home.

I would suggest to your lawyer deputy head that you can take the MDM off when the VAT is paid.

Yes there was terms and conditions attached.

I've just had word from our iPad supplier and they state that as the paid iPads are using the MDM and insured via the scheme then those iPads are bound by the same terms and conditions as the leased iPads at home or in school.
