Here in Kent, start of term is 1st September which is at least after the bank holiday.

My teacher friend in Leicestershire has insets today and tomorrow which seems very early

For the past 5 years I have worked in this school in Kent we have gone back between the 24th-28th August.

This year we are back on the 2nd September, This years start date was planned a couple of years ago so just a coincidence its later with Covid around.

In West Sussex, we're back on the 3rd (because of that grand old tradition of starting the autumn term midweek) with double inset days, so the kids won't be in until the 7th.

I know of one round here that does that too. The KCC official date is 1/9. My governor MAT is sticking to KCC dates with a one day inset because doing anything else is a disaster with the buses.

We are run by a trust but not owned by the trust and they like to do what ever they like!

Yes, school bus routes do often limit flexibility with term dates (unless you run your own fleet of buses like some schools!) - our kids are back officially on September 7, although some students are returning early to quarantine on-site (boarding school).
