This makes me truly sad. Another depressing story of genius laid to waste. He was an awesome footballer in his heydey, and his goal against Scotland at the European Championships where he dinked it over two Scottish defenders and rifled past Goram is still one of the best goals i've seen.

 

To go from the dizzying highs of representing your country and playing club football at the highest level to seeing the shell of a man we see today is saddening:(

Can't say I regard football with anything but annoyance...and I can't say I have any pity for him either..he got paid plenty to do what he did, and by the sounds of it, it went to his head..alcohol issues are self induced.

 

If there are any real mental issues, then I may feel a twinge..but no more. If they're all brought on himself, serves him right. I've quite happily sectioned one of my friends after he went on the self-pity "suicide" binge 3 times..and there was nothing wrong with him that a big fat kick in the arse, lots of exersize and some bloody perspective wouldn't have fixed. Some people need to learn to deal with everyday reality, they really do.

 

No, I'm not unfeeling...but I think footballers are paid stupid money, are a waste of space, and as with a lot of "celebrities", do nothing except piddle the money up the wall. He's got no space to be self-pitying.

Plus his freekick against Arsenal (tho it pains me to say, as I'm an Arsenal fan) way before the likes of Beckham and other freekick 'specialists'.

Watched him in those Sky1 'Legends' things and even a few years ago the skill was there, just the pace had gone a bit.

I agree with you to a point Bendy. I'll happily admit to having little time for self-pitying emo monkeys, but we see lots of potential go to waste all around us - James Dean, Hendrix, Cobain (and to an extent The Winehouse, although i wouldn't agree...) - for whatever reason, self-inflicted or not.

 

There's a point where "oh get a grip for f*ck's sake" stops working and proper mental health issues are evident and need professional attention. I won't pretend to understand it all, but he - and many others - appears to be affected, which is a bloody shame.

 

Yeah, he may have had too much too soon like may other footballers/pop stars/etc etc, but he obviously wasn't able to deal with it all or manage it all very well

He has had mental issues all his life. I've read his autobiography and he is definitely one messed up bloke. It probably didnt help having 3 people quite close to him die when he was younger and him blaming himself for all of them.

 

His book is a great read, very very funny is some parts and really quite sad in others.
