Single NAS for Multiple Sites

Hi All,

 

I am trying to come up with the best backup solution for our 10 Secondary schools. A NAS box for each school is one option along with the external HDD backup, but I'm wondering if all schools backing up to a single offsite 32Tb NAS overnight would be a better solution. The backups would be incremental after the initial full back up. My main concern is how long the backups would take. Each school has about 2Tb of data.

Do you think this is a viable option?

I'd use this as an offsite repository but I'd also want on prem

Why not have a NAS on each side for the local backup and use part of that for each other school’s offsite backup to spread the bandwidth load and avoid a single point of failure for all sites.

The problem with offsite is not just the speed of backup, but also the speed of recovery. It may take an unacceptable amount of time to get any significant data loss restored.

 

However, such a backup in addition to onsite would potentially be very worthwhile.

Another option could be to pair schools and have a Nas box backing up for school A at school B, and vice versa? Edited July 26, 2020 by BlueRay

For complete emergency restores you could just take the server to the backup NAS site to rebuild quickly (assuming it's it's not a stupid distance away!)
