A better home for work in Gmail

So, there are a bunch of resources for this but I thought I'd collate them together here.

I like where this is going. It looks like Gmail's response to Microsoft Teams.

I was reading the Ars article on this last night. Sooooo much hate in the comments. Mostly from people boasting about how little they use their consumer Gmail account, or about how they thought it stopped being cool 3 redesigns ago.

 

For an org that's actually using Chat and Docs this could be quite neat. Personally, I prefer to stick to the "each tool does one thing and does it really well" way of doing things. It just needs to not mess up the core Gmail experience. And I'd want to retain the dedicated Chat apps.

The integration is clearly Google's response to Teams. Seems they're finally getting their act together on the messaging side of things.

I think the dedicated apps will still be available, they're just bringing them into Gmail also. Hopefully it's intelligent enough not to duplicate notifications if you have both installed.

Time to let the staff know just in case they start making the changes over summer and everything has been swapped around by the time they get back!

I do wonder whether this will make it harder to support from our point of view. The scope of who can see and collaborate on various different things might get complicated, and our users are not the best when it comes to referring to apps by their proper names.

looks like its nothing new, just pulling all of the seperate services into one pane - i like it! hopefully not too long of a wait and hopefully chat gets a bit love i just cant get away with the threaded rooms just seems odd to me

There are a bunch of upgrades to Chat. Particularly the shared tasks in rooms and the files view so you can see all files shared into a particular room. You can also choose to turn off threading in chat now it seems.
